Practice Profile

Location and Premises

Sunnyside Surgery is a friendly 5 GP Practice in the coastal town of Penzance in West Cornwall .  We serve almost 6000 patients from a wide variety of social backgrounds.  The Partners currently practice from a converted Victorian house in a conservation area very close to the sea front.  Ownership of the building is shared amongst the Partners.  The building houses five consulting rooms and  two nurses rooms all of which are well equipped .  In addition there are three waiting areas, reception office, secretarial/administration office and a Practice Managers Office.  There is also a Garden Room where counselling services are held.

Patient Services

We aim to provide a high standard of acute care, chronic disease management and health promotion.    We operate an appointment system for all clinical staff offering 10 minute appointments and telephone consultations.  Chronic disease management clinics are run by the Practice Nurse.  We also offer Child Health Clinics, Smoking Cessation, Minor Surgery, Cryotherapy, Travel Vaccination and Warfarin testing and a range of Enhanced and Local services. 

 

Surgery opening hours are 8.30am - 6.30pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday and 8.30am - 7.00pm Tuesday and Wednesday to provide extended opening hours for our patients. Surgeries are currently held 9.00am -12.00pm and 2.00pm - 5.00pm with a Duty Doctor covering the emergency visits.

 

Sunnyside does not cover out-of –hours, the contract for this is with NHS111.

   

Staff

The partners have a full compliment of support staff to include:

2 Minor Illness Practitioners

1 Salaried GP

2 Practice Nurses (2 WTE)

3 Health Care Assistant

Practice Manager

Finance Manager

2 Secretaries (1WTE)

Readcoder/Summariser

2 Administration Staff

7 Receptionists

   

In addition the Practice has the support of District Nurses, Community Midwives, Community Matron, Health Visitor and Community Psychiatric Nurse.

 

We run regular weekly meetings on a Monday morning or lunchtime, alternating between partnership meetings, where just Partners and the Practice Manager attends and clinical meetings to include all clinical staff and attached staff when required.

 

Medical Student Training

The Practice is committed to undergraduate teaching with six students from Years 3-4  and a GP Registrar from the Peninsula Medical School 

    

Information Technology

We currently run the Microtest Evolution clinical system on a network operating approximately 25 PC terminals, all of which are linked to the NHS net.  All patient information is stored on computer with approximately 80% of the medical records being summarised.
